Organic Junk Food – When “Organic” Isn’t Healthy

Organic Junk Food – When “Organic” Isn’t Healthy

I recently listened to an audiobook by Seth Godin, called Small Is The New Big, and one of his thoughts really stuck with me. He was talking about being in a store and wanting to buy a bag of cookies that were going for the natural/organic feel.

He said the packaging looked great – matte finish instead of shiny, an old-fashioned roll top. But then he realized that they were no healthier than most of the other cookies on the shelf.

The quote that really stuck in my brain was this: “They just make easier to lie to yourself when you feed them to your kids.”

There are a lot of benefits to organic food, but there are also lots of varieties of organic junk food. Don’t get fooled by the word ‘organic’ when it’s on a bag of cookies – they’re not healthy just because they have a picture of a farm on them.

Organic junk food is all of the processed stuff – things like pizza, chips, cookies, ice cream, sodas and sugary cereal. Even granola isn’t usually that healthy. It’s full of sugar and fat, and often the white and refined versions of them.

I could say the exact same things about vegan junk food – faux meats, faux cheeses, TVP, and any cookies, chips, pizzas, sodas and sugary cereals that don’t have meat, dairy, eggs or honey. Even organic ice cream isn’t usually healthy.

I understand that junk food is tempting, for taste or convenience or both. I know not everyone has the willpower or the motivation to eliminate them entirely. I think they can be used to make a transition to a healthy diet plan easier. But what I want you to keep in mind is that even when it’s organic junk food, these things aren’t healthy – they’re a compromise. Eat them if you have to, just don’t lie to yourself about them.
